[personal profile] cherith and I would like to thank everyone who has participated in the first round of the [community profile] dragonagewomen challenge - thus far, we have ended up with 13 works posted to our challenge, which is amazing! I haven't personally had the chance to check out everyone's works yet, but I'm thrilled at all the different characters, pairings, and media represented here. Thank you, everyone!

I am working on a master list of all works posted; I will also be posting links to everyone's works to our Tumblr account to advertise them, starting this afternoon.

I know there are several people - including your mods! - who ended up not completing their works in the time period allowed, and thus didn't get posting dates. So, we're declaring an amnesty period! Starting today, and lasting through Saturday, April 7th, anyone who originally signed up but didn't complete their work in time for the deadline can post their work to the community! Bring on your fics, your art, your fanmixes; if you couldn't post or submit your work by the deadline for one reason or another, you have another shot! We'll make another round-up post after April 7th, with the complete list of posted works.

Thank you again, everyone - this has been awesome, and we definitely would like to run another round of [community profile] dragonagewomen in some form or another. If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to leave us a comment or send us an email!

Hey there everyone! So, it's about a half-hour until midnight my time, and that means that Leap Day is almost completely over. This means it's time to start turning in you finished stories, art and fanmixes for the first ever Women of Dragon Age fandom challenge.

Now, if you're not quite done, we understand. Life sort of gets in the way sometime and this is all meant just to give the ladies of DA some love. If you think you'll have it finished in the next few days, that's great. When you're ready, just follow the directions below to turn it in.

To turn in your finished items, just send an email to us at womenofda@gmail.com and make sure to include your LJ or DW name in your email so we know who is turning in. We'll let you know when we've received it and assign you a posting date. Posting doesn't begin until March 7th, so if you're not quite ready yet to turn in, just let us know.

A huge thank you goes out to everyone that's already turned in, and to everyone that's still working, just for participating. We're so excited that this challenge has been well received and can't wait to see what everyone has come up with! <3

Hi, folks!

Sorry for the relatively long silence - your mods have been a bit distracted by other bits of life recently. But we're still here, and we're still totally excited to see all the awesome fanworks you guys are going to provide us with!

If you are still planning to submit a story/art piece/fanmix to [community profile] dragonagewomen, please check in here in the comments! If you're up for it, tell us what you're working on - but mostly, we just want to get a head count and see how many fantastic things we have to look forward to. :D

(You are exempt if you've sent in your finished piece already! But if you're one of those people, feel free to brag in the comments if you want.)

As a reminder, your finished projects are due by February 29th. If you feel like you might need any more time, though, let us know. We definitely know that this month has gotten away from a lot of us. :) Posting will still begin on March 7th, and continue for an as-yet-undetermined time after that. It depends on how many projects we have, so that's one of the reasons we need to hear from you now!

Also, I know some people sent us questions via our Gmail account - we're sorry if we missed yours, so feel free to ask again if you need clarification on anything!

So ... how are you doing with your project? If you're still with us, check in!

Hello, all!

Just a reminder, sign-ups for the Women of Dragon Age Challenge end tomorrow, January 31st! If you haven't already signed up to create something, visit the sign-up post and put your name in the hat! We will post a final list of participants after sign-ups close. There are nearly 40 of you signed up so far, which is amazing - we didn't know what to expect for this, but you guys have far exceeded our expectations. ♥

Remember, you'll have all of February to create your work; there's a mandatory check-in on 2/22, and all works are due to the mods on 2/29. If you're still trying to figure out what to do, visit our prompt post and see if anything inspires you! Or leave a prompt that might inspire someone else! :)

If you're here and still in with us, feel free to use this post to say hello! Talk about what characters you're going to use, or what characters you want to see written/drawn/used the most! If you've already started on your work, how far are you? And, as always, if you have any questions or concerns, ask away!

Hello, everyone! We are thrilled with the number of sign-ups we've had so far! I hope everyone is thinking about what kind of awesome stories/art/mixes they can make. :)

We'll try to post some prompts up as reminders/inspiration at least once a week until the due date at the end of February; remember, anything posted here or in the prompt post is fair game for you! If something sparks an idea, run with it!

Below, you'll find a handful of songs (all by awesome female artists!) that might inspire something. If you know of a song - something you think might inspire a great story or piece of art, but you just don't know what characters/pairings it would work for - feel free to post it in the comments! Maybe someone will know exactly what to do with it!

Remember, you can leave any and all prompts for stories centering around Dragon Age's female characters here, and if you haven't signed up for the challenge yet, do so here! We can't wait to see what everyone comes up with! :D

To sign up for the Women of Dragon Age Fandom Challenge:

1) Make sure you’ve read the FAQ!

2) Copy and paste the form below into the comments of this entry.

3) You may sign up if you don’t have an LJ/DW account! Just leave an anon comment, with your name as the user name of your primary fannish account (wherever it is you post your fanworks - on Tumblr, AO3, DeviantArt, etc), and make sure you leave a valid email address so we can contact you!

4) You can sign up for more than one format - just list each type of media (fic, art, fanmix) you wish to make on the third line.

5) The last line is optional - if you have a good idea of what characters/pairings you’re going to write, or if you know you’re going to use one of the prompts in the prompt post, then it’d be fun to hear about it so we can squee and anticipate appropriately! But don’t feel compelled to tell us anything right now if you’re still thinking!

This post will close on January 31st, 2012. If you have any questions or concerns, you can either comment here or email us at womenofda@gmail.com.

What's the Women of Dragon Age Fandom Challenge?

This challenge was created for the sole purpose of celebrating the women of Dragon Age, and to create works that show the relationships between those women. Works should be able to pass the Bechdel Test, and for the purposes of this challenge the women must be the primary focus of the work. Works do not have to be sexual or intimate in nature, and could be focused on the friendship of two characters (eg.Isabela & Aveline) without a romantic nature.

What’s the Bechdel Test, and what does it mean for this challenge?

The Bechdel Test is a story that passes all of the following rules:

1) it must include more than one woman
2) who have at least one conversation
3) about something other than a man/men.

For this challenge, we’re asking participants to create a work that centers on the relationship (romantic or not, canon or not) between at least two of the female characters of Dragon Age. It could be romantic or sexual. It could be friendship. It could be women adventuring together. It could be an interaction between enemies. Anything, as long as the main plot of the story revolves around multiple women and their interactions with each other - interactions that are not about/centered around male characters.

For more information on The Bechdel Test, you can read about it here.

So, are you only looking for stories?

No! This challenge is open to writers, artists, and fanmixers. We’d love to see art or mixes dedicated to the relationships between Dragon Age women.

No boys allowed?

Secondary characters only! So, for example, you can write a story about how Leliana and Morrigan save Alistair when he falls down a well, but it should focus on what Leliana and Morrigan are doing, not on how Alistair is trying to get himself free.

How does the challenge work?

...Sign-ups are open between now and January 31st, 2012.
...You’ll have time to write or create your work between now and February 29th, 2012.
...Respond to the check-in on February 22nd to let us know you’re still working.
...Works should be turned in to the mods on February 29th, 2012.
...Posting begins on March 7th, 2012.

Where do I sign up?

The sign-up post is here. Please read the sign-up post and make sure to leave a comment with your information.

Do I have to wait until the 29th, to send in my work if I finish early?

No! Please, if you finish early, email the mods as soon as you’re ready. This will give us extra time to start the posting schedule before everyone finishes on the 29th.

What if I miss the turn-in date on the 29th?

Well, ultimately, we’d like this not to happen. But, we understand that life sometimes gets in the way and that you might be a little late. If, you tell us in advance that you’re going to be a little late, we’re happy to accept your submission as long as it’s before the 7th of March. However, if you don’t give us any notice, we can’t really plan around it, and won’t take a submission after the 29th.

How long does the work have to be?

Stories must be at least 1,000 words.
Fanmixes must contain at least 12 songs, and have some kind of cover art.
Art is hard to quantify, but we trust that all fanartists will give their project their best! :)

I want to play, but I have no idea what to write/draw/mix!

That’s okay! We’ll also be setting up a post dedicated exclusively to prompts - hopefully one of those will inspire you! Keep an eye on the community for that post, with more details.

Are crossovers allowed? What about AUs?

Fandom crossovers are allowed, but your work must center around at least one female Dragon Age character. And the main point of the work must still be the relationship between two women - two DA women, a DA character and a female character from your crossover fandom, whatever works in your context!

And we encourage all the AUs ever. :D

What if I want to write a story AND make a mix? And make art, because I’m that ambitious!

You can initially sign up to make one of each art form - so, if you’re sufficiently motivated, you can sign up to write, mix, and make art! You’ll get a separate posting date for each work created.

Also, you’ll be allowed to sign up to make another work if you turn in your first project early! We just ask that you don’t rush your work - make sure you take the time to edit, get a beta, do whatever you need to do to make your work the best possible piece!

What happens when posting begins?

After you turn in your finished work, we’ll email you with your posting date - on that day, you can post your work to whatever platform you prefer. (LJ, DW, AO3, Tumblr, DeviantArt, et cetera.) Then, make a post to the LJ community with a link back to your work, so we can all flail over it!

Why are you assigning dates?

So that your work can be properly appreciated! It’s much easier for people to read/view/download your work right away if it’s only one of a handful of things posted that day, rather than one of a couple dozen or so things all posted at the exact same time. In other words - less competition! Everyone wins!

But I don’t have an LJ account!

If you don’t want to create a free account, you can email the link to your work to us, and we’ll help you make arrangements to get it posted on the LJ community.

Why do the Dreamwidth and Tumblr communities exist, then?

The mods will be posting links and roundups to DW and Tumblr, advertising the work posted on the LJ community.

There will also be an AO3 collection set up for works created during this challenge. Stay tuned for more info on that!

Oh no! I missed the deadline by # days! Is it too late to sign up?

Well, technically speaking, yes. However, we’re going to keep a place available for people that miss the deadline, or have things that don’t quite meet the length requirements, or have already finished on project. We want to support the works that have been created and want them to be appreciated by everyone.

Do I really have to give you my LJ user name/email address?

Well, it’s really the best way for us to get in contact with you. Having your LJ name will help know who to give posting access to when posting time rolls around. And having your email address will help us keep in contact with you about final check-in and due dates.

Is that it?

Just about, yeah. If you have further concerns/queries, read the FAQ first, and if they still haven't been addressed, then feel free to email the mods at womenofda@gmail.com.
